The environmental organization Greenpeace has documented asbestos contamination at seven tourist destinations in Burgenland and criticizes the responsible authorities for, according to its own statements, failing to conduct further investigations.
The environmental organization Greenpeace has detected asbestos-containing materials at a total of seven tourist destinations in Burgenland. The investigation extends across several well-known sights, including Burg Lockenhaus and Burg Schlaining, as well as the Geschriebenstein viewpoint in southern Burgenland. The list makes clear that the contamination is not limited to individual locations but represents a statewide problem that directly affects visitors.
Greenpeace has long been calling for comprehensive search and remediation measures to protect the population from the health risks of the material. Asbestos fibers can be released when damaged or weathered and are suspected of causing severe respiratory illnesses. The environmental organization sees the state government as obligated to systematically evaluate delivery lists and construction archives in order to identify hidden sites of contamination.
