The Austrian Environment Ministry is examining whether closed quarries in Burgenland could be used in the future as landfills for asbestos-containing waste, and is preparing an amendment to the landfill ordinance for this purpose.

As reported by the Ö1-Mittagsjournal and confirmed by the ministry to the APA, work is currently underway on an amendment to the landfill ordinance. The aim is to create the legal basis for using decommissioned quarries in the region as sites for the final disposal of asbestos-containing materials.

A prerequisite for this, however, is a corresponding waste-management permit as a landfill site, as the ministry stated. Without this permit, a quarry cannot be used as a landfill, regardless of the planned amendment to the ordinance. The ministry also pointed to an official test in which the asbestos levels had been "in the 0.0 range."
