Astronomers identify fastest known star in the Milky Way

How the discovery was made

The identification required sustained monitoring of the central region of the Milky Way, where gravitational forces are strongest and where ordinary stars can be flung to extraordinary velocities. Stars near the galactic center can reach such speeds through a process sometimes described as gravitational assist, in which the tidal forces near a supermassive black hole can accelerate an object without requiring it to fall in. Why the galactic center produces fast stars

The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, based in Germany, led the observational work. The institute's long-running program at the Chilean facility has produced a series of measurements of the galactic center, including earlier detections of stars orbiting close to the central black hole.

The Chilean facility used for the observations is situated at one of the high-altitude sites favored for infrared astronomy, where atmospheric turbulence is reduced and where the galactic center is visible for extended portions of the year. These conditions make the site well suited to tracking the faint, fast-moving sources near the galactic core.

What comes next

Researchers say the newly identified object will serve as a reference point for future surveys aimed at cataloguing additional fast stars. Continued monitoring is expected to refine the orbital parameters and to test predictions about how such objects are produced and how they evolve over time.

The team plans further observations to determine whether the star's trajectory is bound to the galaxy or whether it is on an escape trajectory that will eventually carry it beyond the Milky Way's gravitational influence.
