The convection zone is the layer beneath the Sun's surface in which hot plasma flows rise and cooler ones sink. The researchers suspect that the smallest magnetic structures now visible could form a bridge between this zone and the upper atmosphere.

According to the report, the images were produced using a combination of spectroscopy and short exposures. This method makes it possible to track changes in the Sun's magnetic field over very short periods, allowing inferences to be drawn about energy transport.

The Inouye Solar Telescope is considered the world's most powerful solar telescope. It features a 4-meter mirror and was named after the late U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, who had championed its construction.

The researchers expect that the image series will serve as a reference for future models of the solar atmosphere. They also hope it will lead to a better understanding of space weather phenomena that can affect satellites and power grids on Earth.
