Austria's Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) announced at a press conference on Tuesday that asylum applications in Austria in the first half of 2026 fell by 44 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
According to the Interior Ministry, a total of 4,903 asylum applications were registered in Austria in the first half of 2026. In the comparable period of the previous year, there were still around 8,800 applications. According to the Ministry, this puts the number of applications at its lowest level in approximately 23 years. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) contrasted the application figures at a press conference on Tuesday with the more than 7,000 removals and deportations carried out in the first half-year.
