As the figures show, only a small proportion of first applications now come from people entering without valid documents. The ministry sees this as confirmation that consistent checks at the external borders are having an effect. At the same time, the department urged that proceedings be concluded swiftly in order to avoid long stays in basic care.

Political Reactions

A spokesperson stressed that the downward trend was not an end in itself, but was intended to keep capacities free for those cases in which protection is actually necessary. The competent authorities were working to further accelerate asylum procedures and to consistently implement returns when grounds for protection do not exist. This was intended to preserve the credibility of Austria's asylum system.

The opposition reacted cautiously to the figures presented. Critics accused the Interior Ministry of using the statistics to stage political successes. Aid organizations, on the other hand, emphasized that a falling number of applications does not mean an improvement in the situation for those seeking protection. Every individual case must continue to be examined.

Background to the Decline

Industry specialists pointed out that the decline could also have cyclical causes. Falling employment opportunities and rising living costs in many European countries reduced the incentive to enter without prospects of staying. The development is therefore not solely attributable to political measures, but also reflects pan-European trends.

For the coming months, the ministry announced further reports. If the trend continues, Austria could see itself on track with the federal government's target of permanently reducing the number of first applications. At the same time, awareness is growing that successful asylum policy must keep an eye not only on application numbers, but also on the quality of procedures and the framework conditions of integration policy.
