Atlético Madrid has rejected a transfer of its striker Julián Álvarez to FC Barcelona because the Argentine forward still has a long-term contract in the Spanish capital.

Spanish first-division club Atlético Madrid is blocking a move of its forward Julián Álvarez to FC Barcelona, according to information from several media outlets. The club has made clear that the Argentine international is still contractually bound in Madrid and will not be released. Neither Atlético nor Barcelona had issued a statement on the reports at the time of writing.

Contract binds Álvarez until 2030

Atlético is reportedly pointing to a contract that ties the South American to the club until 2030. An early departure would therefore only be possible via a hefty transfer fee or a mutually agreed solution with the club, which Atlético currently rules out. As a result, the Catalans' plans to fill the striker spot left vacant by the departure of Robert Lewandowski have failed for now.
