Atlético digs in around a 500 million euro clause

Atlético has reacted coolly to the public push. Shortly after the interview aired, images circulated on social media showing some Atlético fans burning the player's jersey. An unnamed club representative told the Madrid sports newspaper AS: "Es gibt keinen Betrag, für den Barcelona Julian kaufen könnte – er wird nicht zu Barcelona wechseln" and "Entweder wird die Ausstiegsklausel gezahlt oder gar nichts."

The club's reported position is anchored by Álvarez's contract, which runs until 2030, and a release clause reported at 500 million euros. Atlético mocked Real Madrid's 150 million euro offer on social media two weeks ago, writing: "Ihr bringt uns noch mehr zum Lachen als Barcelona."

Real Madrid rebuild under way

Real Madrid's interest is reported by multiple outlets. According to the facts on file, the club has already signed Ibrahima Konaté (27, from Liverpool) and Bernardo Silva (31, from Manchester City) on free transfers, paid 55 million euros to Chelsea for Marc Cucurella (27), and is reportedly set to add Denzel Dumfries (30, Inter Milan). José Mourinho is also reportedly returning to the Santiago Bernabéu after previously coaching the club from 2010 to 2013.

FC Barcelona is also reportedly interested in Álvarez and prepared to offer around 100 million euros. Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has reported that Álvarez himself wants to move to Barcelona rather than Real Madrid, though Álvarez did not specify a destination in his ESPN interview.

What a transfer would mean historically

If a deal were struck at 150 million euros, Álvarez would become the third most expensive transfer in football history and only the third player this millennium to move directly between Atlético and Real Madrid, after Santiago Solari in the summer of 2000 and Theo Hernández. He would also become the 30th Argentine to play for Real Madrid, following a lineage that includes Santiago Solari (208 matches), Fernando Redondo (228 matches) and Gonzalo Higuaín (264 matches).

Real Madrid has reportedly endured two disappointing sporting years without winning a major title, a context that helps explain the aggressive recruitment push. Atlético, meanwhile, has so far shown no interest in negotiations and is expected to dig in unless the full release clause is met.
