Vienna, 07 June 2026

Austria's governing coalition of ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS announced agreement on a double budget for 2027 and 2028 on Sunday, presenting the package under the motto 'Upswing. Justice. Reforms.' and confirming a new housing construction programme alongside higher spending on defense, education and women's affairs.

Consolidation target and EU deficit procedure

Christian Stocker (ÖVP), Andreas Babler (SPÖ) and Beate Meinl-Reisinger (NEOS) set out the framework in a joint statement, with Markus Marterbauer (SPÖ) due to present the detailed plans to the National Council on Wednesday. The motto 'Aufschwung. Gerechtigkeit. Reformen.' frames a budget that combines consolidation with targeted investment, the coalition said, and aims to bring Austria's deficit down to three percent of GDP by 2028 so that the country can exit the EU deficit procedure.
