Vienna, 08 July 2026

The Austrian National Council opened the budget debate on Wednesday, the third day of the plenary week, with the debate on the Budget Accompanying Act, while at the same time the general debate on the double budget 2027 and 2028 took place.

To kick off the budget week, the Budget Accompanying Act took center stage, which this year simultaneously served as the framework for the general debate on the double budget 2027 and 2028. Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer (SPÖ) appeared before the National Council on Thursday, 11 June 2026, to present the government's key points. The debate marks the beginning of a multi-day confrontation over the country's fiscal policy direction for the coming two years.

As parliamentary information shows, various legislative matters were still passed on Monday and Tuesday of the plenary week before the members of parliament began to work through the individual budget chapters from day three of the plenary week. "Während am Montag und Dienstag noch diverse Gesetzesmaterien beschlossen wurden, nehmen die Abgeordneten ab Tag drei der Plenarwoche die einzelnen Budgetkapitel durch," it was stated from the High House.
