The Austrian government has decided on a reform of conscription at the summer ministerial council, extending mandatory military service to six plus three months and expanding civilian service in parallel.
The agreement followed months of political debate over personnel requirements in the Austrian Armed Forces and civilian service. In the future, basic military service is to last six plus three months, as the decision states.
Alongside the extension of conscription, the government has also agreed on an expansion of civilian service. Civilian service will also be expanded — by nine plus two months.
