Vienna, 24 September 2026

The coalition government in Austria plans to approach the opposition parties as early as this week to discuss the planned reform of conscription.

The conscription reform is one of the central domestic policy projects of the government and has been the subject of controversial debate for months. After the original timetable had to be adjusted, the coalition is now seeking broader parliamentary support. Talks with the opposition are to begin later this week, according to parliamentary circles.

Timeline: First recruits no earlier than mid-2027

A central point of the reform is the extension of basic military service. Since there is at least six months between the assessment and actual enlistment, the first recruits starting the extended service would arrive no earlier than mid-2027. The government wants to take the time pressure out of the debate and organize the transition in a clean manner.
