Austria was defeated 0-9 by Switzerland in their fourth group match of the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship on Wednesday at the Swiss Life Arena in Zurich.
The Swiss team, packed with six NHL players, took an early lead with Theo Rochette scoring the first goal in the 6th minute. Timo Meier and Nico Hischier followed up with goals in the 10th and 12th minutes, respectively, extending Switzerland's lead to 3-0.
Damien Riat added a fourth goal during a power play in the 14th minute, further solidifying Switzerland's dominance. By the end of the first period, Austria was trailing 0-4, with little chance to recover.
In the second period, Switzerland continued their relentless attack. Hischier scored his second goal during a power play in the 30th minute, followed by Calvin Thürkauf in the 31st minute. Rochette then netted his second goal in the 33rd minute, making it 7-0.
