Austrian Airlines to drop loss-making Vienna–Graz route

A chronically unprofitable route

The Graz route, alongside other regional services, has long been identified by analysts and the carrier itself as structurally unprofitable. Short-haul domestic flights within Austria typically operate with thin margins because of high airport charges, limited passenger volumes and competition from rail alternatives, particularly the direct rail link between Vienna and Graz.

AUA's move comes against the backdrop of a broader cost review by the Lufthansa Group, which has been pressing its subsidiaries to improve earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins. Group management has repeatedly signalled that loss-making routes across the network must be addressed if individual airlines are to meet their financial targets.

Pressure from the Lufthansa Group

Annette Mann, the head of Austrian Airlines, has overseen the airline's recent restructuring push. Under her leadership, AUA has prioritised capacity adjustments and network optimisation as tools to bring the carrier back into sustainable profitability, even where those decisions involve politically sensitive cuts to domestic connectivity.

The decision to drop Vienna–Graz is likely to draw political attention in Austria, where regional air connections are often viewed as part of the country's transport infrastructure. Stakeholders in Styria, the federal state whose capital is Graz, have historically pushed back against reductions in flight capacity that could undermine business travel and tourism links.

Industry observers note that AUA's review also touches on services to Zürich, München and Frankfurt — three of the airline's most important hubs and feeder routes — reflecting the group's strategy of concentrating capacity on connections that feed its long-haul network rather than on thin domestic sectors.

Austrian Airlines said it would communicate the detailed timeline and replacement arrangements for affected passengers in due course. Travellers holding bookings on the Vienna–Graz route after the planned cut-off date will be offered re-routing options or refunds, in line with standard airline practice.

The carrier's announcement is the latest signal that Europe's network airlines are continuing to prune capacity where unit economics no longer work. With rail alternatives improving across Central Europe and short-haul yields under pressure, airlines including the Lufthansa Group are reallocating aircraft to higher-yielding long-haul and hub-feeding services.
