Vienna, Austria — May 13, 2026

Austria’s federal government has taken another step toward its planned ban on social media for children under 14, hosting a second roundtable discussion with tech platforms at the Chancellery on Wednesday.

Progress Toward a Legal Framework

State Secretary for Digitalization Alexander Pröll (ÖVP) told reporters before the meeting that the government is making daily progress toward both legal and technical solutions for the proposed ban. "We are getting closer to the legislative and technical solution every day," Pröll said, adding that the goal is to present a draft law by the end of June.

The ban, which could take effect in early 2027, would require collaboration with social media companies. "There is a technical and a legal solution," Pröll noted, stressing that the government aims to align with EU-wide efforts on age restrictions. "As it is, it cannot remain," he said, referencing current gaps in youth protection online.
