The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) will save €34.4 million annually starting in 2027 through a series of cuts to patient benefits and reimbursements, according to corroborated figures released this week.

Major Savings from Transportation and Dental Changes

Changes to patient transportation reimbursements will account for the largest portion of savings, with €15.7 million projected for 2026 and €23.6 million annually from 2027 onward. Under the new rules, transportation costs will only be covered if patients present a doctor's order confirming their inability to walk. Additionally, reimbursements for transfers between hospitals have been abolished entirely, shifting those costs to hospital operators.

Dental prosthetics will also see increased patient contributions, with co-payments for essential items like crowns and plastic prostheses rising from 25% to 30%. This change is expected to save €5.8 million in 2026 and €8.7 million annually starting in 2027.
