Austria’s academic high schools (AHS) achieved their highest-ever Matura exam pass rate in 2025, with 95% of students succeeding at the main sitting, according to newly released data.

Record Performance Across School Types

The AHS-Langform, Austria’s traditional academic track, led all school types with a 95% pass rate, while upper-level secondary schools (Oberstufenrealgymnasien) followed closely at 91%. Across all AHS institutions, nearly 94% of students passed on their first attempt.

Vocational higher schools (BHS) also posted strong results, with an average 91% success rate. Technical colleges (HTL) topped this category at 93%, followed by agricultural and forestry schools (HLFS) at 92%. Schools specializing in economics, tourism, and social services achieved 91%, as did teacher training colleges for early education.

The only laggard was commercial academies (HAK), where just 87% of students passed. Officials noted the gap reflects differing academic demands across tracks.
