Austrian households throw away an average of €100 worth of food each month, according to a new analysis by the environmental organization WWF released on Tuesday.

The WWF combined existing data and studies on food waste with current food prices to calculate the figure. It works out to roughly 14 kilograms of discarded food per household every month.

Fruit and vegetables, together with bread and baked goods, are the items most often wasted. More expensive categories such as meat and fish are thrown away less frequently, the analysis found.

What Ends Up in the Bin

Dominik Heizmann from WWF highlighted the dual burden: “Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Lebensmittelverschwendung nicht nur Umwelt und Klima belastet, sondern auch spürbare Kosten für Haushalte verursacht. Wer weniger wegwirft, spart daher Geld und schont wertvolle Ressourcen.”
