Banned Pesticides Found in European Supermarket Foods, Warns Foodwatch

The findings reveal what Foodwatch describes as a "pesticide boomerang" effect. "Über importierte Lebensmittel können ihre Rückstände anschließend wieder nach Europa gelangen – als sogenannter 'Pestizid-Bumerang'," the organization stated. Pesticides banned in the EU are produced and exported, only to return through imported food products.

Calls for Stronger Protections

Markus Linkeseder of Foodwatch Austria criticized the findings, stating: "Viele Pestizide sind in der EU aus gutem Grund nicht zugelassen: Sie stehen teils mit schweren gesundheitlichen Erkrankungen in Verbindung. Gleichzeitig schaden sie unseren Böden, unserem Wasser sowie der Tier- und Pflanzenwelt. Dass Rückstände solcher Stoffe trotzdem in Lebensmitteln auftauchen und somit auf unseren Tellern landen, ist nicht hinnehmbar."

Foodwatch warned that the planned EU Omnibus Package on food and feed safety could weaken existing protection standards. The organization sees "dringenden politischen Handlungsbedarf" (urgent need for political action) to close gaps in the safety net.

"Nicht nur die Politik, sondern auch die Supermärkte und die Produzenten müssen diese Lücken schließen und uns vor dieser unsichtbaren Gefahr bestmöglich schützen," Linkeseder added.

Systemic Failures

Foodwatch highlighted flaws in the current control system, noting that their sample revealed "massive Lücken" (massive gaps) in food safety protections. The organization emphasized that pesticides banned in the EU for health and environmental risks are still entering the food chain through imports.

The findings come as EU policymakers consider changes to food safety regulations. Foodwatch cautioned against weakening standards, stressing that consumers remain at risk from pesticide residues that should not be present in their food.
