Johannes Pressl, president of Austria’s Municipal Association and mayor of Ardagger, voiced strong opposition to federal education reforms during an appearance on ORF’s ZiB2 news program Wednesday evening. The ÖVP politician specifically targeted plans to extend primary education to six years and consolidate small rural schools, warning of practical constraints and eroded local identity.

Space and Funding Challenges

Pressl emphasized physical limitations, noting Austria’s approximately 3,000 primary schools, many in small communities. "Da fehlt einfach der Platz" ("There simply isn’t enough space"), he stated, referencing capacity concerns if grades were expanded. He cited a €900 million maintenance backlog nationwide, stressing: "Wenn man das haben will, dann muss man richtig Geld in die Hand nehmen" ("If you want this, you must invest substantial money").
