VIENNA, April 30, 2026 Overcrowded ÖBB Railjet cleared by Vienna police at Meidling Vienna police intervened to clear an overcrowded ÖBB-Railjet train at Meidling station on Thursday afternoon after safety concerns made it impossible to continue the journey.
Safety Concerns Halt Journey
The train, operated by Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), was stopped at Meidling station in Vienna after officials determined that the overcrowding posed a risk to passenger safety. Authorities concluded that a safe continuation of the trip could not be guaranteed, prompting the intervention.
Passengers were asked to disembark, with some leaving voluntarily while others required persuasion from police officers. The situation caused significant delays, with the train eventually departing around 14:30—roughly an hour behind schedule. The ÖBB attempted to mitigate inconvenience by offering affected passengers vouchers worth 25 euros to use on alternative trains, though many reportedly refused the compensation.
Passenger Reactions and Compensation Issues
The offer of vouchers sparked mixed reactions among travelers. While some accepted the compensation, others declined, leaving the situation unresolved for a portion of the passengers. The ÖBB emphasized the importance of seat reservations, particularly ahead of busy travel weekends, to avoid similar incidents in the future.
