Vienna, Austria — May 10, 2026
Austrian opposition leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger defended proposed pension cuts during a Sunday interview on ORF’s "Pressestunde," citing the need to align retirement benefits with lower wage increases for civil servants and metalworkers.
Budget Balancing and Pension Adjustments
Meinl-Reisinger, head of the liberal NEOS party, emphasized that pensioners had already contributed to austerity measures through higher health insurance premiums. She noted pensions had been "always raised above inflation" in previous years, but current negotiations require broader fiscal adjustments.
"We must be careful not to drift into a fairness issue," she said, comparing pension levels to recent lower wage agreements for public sector employees and metalworkers. The remarks come as Austria’s coalition government faces pressure to finalize its 2027/28 double budget, which includes spending cuts across multiple sectors.
