Austrian pig farmers report weekly million-euro losses and demand relief

In the document, the farmers advocated above all for "die weitere Öffnung von Exportmärkten, den Abschluss von Regionalisierungsabkommen, eine europaweite Angleichung der Produktionsstandards" as well as "eine Entlastung der Betriebe von weiteren kostenintensiven Vorgaben." This is intended to secure competitiveness compared with other EU states.

Political demands

The tense situation is driven, among other things, by rising costs for feed, energy, and animal welfare measures. Austria also has high animal welfare standards that go beyond the requirements in some other EU countries. This further increases the cost pressure on domestic producers.

The situation is exacerbated by an upcoming regulation in the livestock sector: from mid-2034, Austria will ban fully slatted floors, in some cases with a transition period. This means that stables will have to be converted or renovated, requiring further investment.

Reaction from the ministry

According to its own statements, the industry is in contact with Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP). The minister announced in the press release that he would "für faire Wettbewerbsbedingungen" at the EU level. No concrete measures or commitments were named for the time being.

The demands of pig farmers partly overlap with positions also raised by other agricultural associations in the EU. Observers point out that harmonizing production standards within the European Union is politically difficult to push through, since individual member states sometimes have significantly lower requirements.

Outlook for the coming weeks

Market observers point out that producer prices for pork in Austria depend not only on domestic production costs but also on demand from the food retail sector and on imports from other EU countries. If demand falls or imports rise, producer prices come under additional pressure.

The current crisis is hitting the industry at a phase when many small family farms are already considering giving up their operations. If the economic situation does not improve, pig farmers expect further structural change, which would further reduce domestic production.

According to the industry, the coming weeks should show whether the political talks with the Ministry of Agriculture will produce concrete results. Until then, for pig farmers there is only the signal to the public that the situation is serious and that quick solutions are needed.
