Austria's pig farmers are sounding the alarm over ongoing economic losses and are demanding relief from policymakers as well as access to new export markets.

Background to the crisis

The domestic family farms in pig farming are in a "dramatic situation" according to the industry. As Franz Rauscher, chairman of Schweinehaltung Österreich (Austrian Pig Farming), stated, the farms are currently losing "up to 20 euros with every pig." Extrapolated to domestic family farms, this means weekly losses of 1.6 million euros.

The economic viability of the industry has been suffering since last year, it was said further in the press release. Producer prices are insufficient to cover production costs. Rauscher formulated the demand that farmers must "at least be able to produce at cost" "in order to be able to make investments for the future."
