Andreas Scheu, a researcher at the University of Klagenfurt, has criticized the practice of comparing countries on public trust in science as if it were a sports competition, arguing the figures obscure more than they reveal.
Why rankings mislead
In remarks carried by the Austrian Press Agency (APA), Scheu pushed back against what he described as the popular habit of lining countries up against each other in so-called Vertrauens-Misstrauens-Narrativen, or trust-versus-mistrust narratives. He warned that treating such comparisons as if they produced a podium of winners distorted what the underlying data can actually show. "Bei den Vertrauens-Misstrauens-Narrativen werden die Länder oft gegeneinander gelegt, als wäre es eine Fußball-WM. Platz eins, Platz zwei ... So würde ich Vertrauenswerte nicht lesen wollen," Scheu told the agency.
