Austrians returned more plastic and metal packaging for recycling, with the volume of collected material rising in every federal state, according to figures from Austria's packaging recovery scheme.
The increases varied considerably by region. Vienna led the country with a 14% rise in collected plastic and metal packaging, while Carinthia and Styria registered the smallest growth at 4% each. The remaining federal states, including Burgenland, Upper Austria, Vorarlberg, Lower Austria, Tyrol and Salzburg, all recorded gains within that range, indicating a nationwide shift in recycling behaviour rather than a regional outlier.
Under Austria's packaging recovery system, households return used plastic and metal packaging to dedicated collection points or kerbside bins, where the material is sorted, baled and sent to recyclers. The scheme is financed by producers and retailers, who pay fees based on the type and weight of packaging they place on the market. Higher collection volumes usually mean that more material is diverted from residual waste and processed into secondary raw materials.
