For the first time in Australia, a native seabird has tested positive for the highly contagious H5N1 avian flu virus, while authorities are investigating a possible case in a seal in New South Wales.

First detection in a native seabird

Laboratory tests by the government research organization CSIRO confirmed the pathogen in a crested tern (Thalasseus bergii) found on the coast of South Australia, Agriculture Minister Julie Collins announced. According to the authorities, this is the first detection of the virus in a native seabird in Australia. Previously, H5N1 had been detected on the continent only in migratory birds from the subantarctic region, including a skua.
