BaFin Reviews Jungheinrich's Half-Year Financial Statements – Group Points to Impairment in Russia Business

According to the financial regulator, the focus of the investigation is the valuation of assets in connection with the planned sale of the group's Russia business. "The valuation may have been incorrect," BaFin stated. The former Russian subsidiary has been fully deconsolidated since February 2026.

Jungheinrich stated that the intention to sell could have led to an impairment requirement. "Without taking this into account, above all rental equipment and inventories may have been valued too highly," the Hamburg-based company explained. The group fully recognized the impairment in July 2025. "The authority's review is solely about when Jungheinrich should have recognized the impairment," the company said.

Company's Response

According to its own statements, Jungheinrich is in contact with the authority and is accompanying the review "constructively." At the same time, the group made clear: "Revenue and earnings in the consolidated financial statements for fiscal years 2025 and 2026 are not affected by the review."

Market Reaction and Analyst Assessments

The news of the BaFin review initially had a noticeable impact on the stock in the markets. On Tuesday, the share price plunged in pre-market trading on the Tradegate platform by 4.36 percent to 23.70 euros compared to the XETRA close. During the day, the stock continued to decline in trading.

Despite the short-term price decline, several analysts continue to rate the group positively. Lucas Ferhani, an analyst at Jefferies, expects that the business figures for the first half of 2025 may need to be adjusted in order to recognize an impairment at an earlier stage. At the same time, however, he considers the financial impact to be rather limited, "as fines of this kind – especially given the size of the company – are usually minor." Jefferies had rated the stock "Buy" on July 10, 2026.

Other houses also view Jungheinrich positively: Barclays Capital rated the stock "Overweight" on May 8, 2026, Bernstein Research rated it "Outperform" on May 19, 2026, and Warburg Research rated the stock "Buy" on June 30, 2026. BaFin also pointed out that similar reviews in the past had taken several weeks and had only led to findings of errors in a minority of cases.

BaFin Series of Financial Statement Reviews

The investigation is part of a series of BaFin proceedings regarding possible accounting errors. The authority recently identified errors in the financial statements of IT service provider Nagarro. The authority is also currently reviewing the 2025 financial statements of pharmaceutical manufacturer Dermapharm. Behind BaFin's approach is an increased focus on compliance with accounting rules, after a number of companies have been scrutinized in recent months due to possible accounting errors.

According to the information, Jungheinrich has now completely discontinued its Russia business. The Russian company has no longer belonged to Jungheinrich since February, the group said. As a result, the business activities and the subsidiary are no longer part of the group.

BaFin stated that it would continue to review the matter. When the proceedings are expected to be concluded remained unclear initially. The authority pointed out that comparable proceedings had taken several weeks, but did not wish to comment on individual steps.

Market participants are watching the progress, particularly with regard to the question of whether the review will lead to further corrections to the half-year financial statements beyond the timing of the impairment recognition. As long as the BaFin findings are not available, observers expect heightened nervousness – particularly among investors who are counting on swift clarity regarding the accounting treatment of the Russia exposure.

With regard to valuation experts, the picture remains divided: While the short-term price reaction shows the pressure on the stock, the analysts cited by Bloomberg see fundamental need for action as rather limited. The final assessment now depends on how BaFin answers the valuation question and whether the proceedings will result in material consequences for accounting.
