Christoph Baumgartner, a 26-year-old attacking player for RB Leipzig, sustained a serious muscle injury during the warm-up for the final test match before the World Cup, will be out for four to five months, and has nevertheless traveled to the USA to accompany Austria's national team as a spectator and conversation partner.
Injury during warm-up
The injury casts a shadow over the immediate World Cup preparations of the Austrian national football team. On June 1, Christoph Baumgartner sustained a serious muscle injury in the adductor region of his thigh during the warm-up for the final test match before the departure to the USA. "It was one of the last shots I would have taken, I felt a twinge. At that moment I realized something had happened. I wouldn't have thought it would turn out to be this serious," Baumgartner described the moment of diagnosis in an ORF interview on Friday in Santa Barbara.
