A 66-year-old pilot flew a small Chinese light sport aircraft into the 528-metre-high Citic Tower in the centre of Beijing and was killed in the process; thirteen people were injured, according to official sources.
The incident occurred last Friday in the Chaoyang district of the Chinese capital. As local authorities reported on Thursday, the aircraft was a single-engine light sport aircraft of the type Aurora SA60L with the registration B-12PP. The pilot, a 66-year-old man from Beijing surnamed Liu, had reportedly held a sport pilot licence since 2021, worked as a freelancer, lived alone and was divorced.
According to the authorities' investigation, the man initially took off in the outlying eastern district of Pinggu. He later left the designated flying area and lost contact with the airport before crashing into the skyscraper. How a small aircraft managed to fly into the centre of the mega-city remained unclear even a week after the incident. "It remains unclear how the small aircraft was able to fly into central Beijing", it was stated.
