Belfast, 11 June 2026
Police in Belfast fired water cannon at protesters on Wednesday night during a second consecutive evening of violence that was triggered by a stabbing in the city and that left more than two dozen people homeless.
Background of the stabbing
The unrest followed a knife attack in which Hadi Alodid, a 30-year-old man from Sudan, is accused of attempting to murder Stephen Ogilvie, a man in his 40s who suffered deep cuts to his head, face and back. According to a detective told the court, Alodid blinded Ogilvie in the left eye during the assault. Alodid appeared by video link in Belfast Magistrates' Court and was ordered held in jail. He refused legal representation through an Arabic interpreter and did not enter a plea. He was additionally charged with possessing a knife and threatening to kill a radiographer while being treated for a hand injury after the attack.
