Belgium Parts Ways with National Team Coach Garcia – van Bommel in Talks as Successor

Under Garcia, Belgium reached the knockout stage of the tournament and won 4:1 there in the round of 16 in Seattle against the USA, who were appearing as co-hosts. It was only in the quarterfinals that the Belgians' journey ended: With a late 1:2, the team lost to eventual world champions Spain, who won the title on Sunday.

Discussions and No Contract Until Euro 2028

Despite this sporting record, both the association and the coach decided against continuing the collaboration until the European Championship 2028 in Great Britain. Garcia spoke of "Diskussionen" with the association that had led to the decision. He said in his own words: "Ich verlasse Belgien in der Liga A der UEFA Nations League und unter den acht besten Mannschaften der Welt." Garcia also explained: "Man habe sich nach ‚Diskussionen' mit dem Verband dagegen entschieden, die eineinhalbjährige Reise bis zur EM 2028 in Großbritannien zu verlängern, sagte Garcia."

The association justified the move with the start of a new cycle. Sporting director Vincent Mannaert announced that the personnel matter would be resolved swiftly. "Gemeinsam mit meinem Team bereite ich mich derzeit auf einen neuen Zyklus vor, einschließlich der Ernennung eines neuen Nationaltrainers", Mannaert said.

Mark van Bommel as Favorite

According to media reports, Mark van Bommel is considered the hottest candidate to succeed him. The 49-year-old Dutchman has coaching experience at PSV Eindhoven and VfL Wolfsburg. In addition, van Bommel is a former FC Bayern Munich player and is therefore extremely well-connected on the European football stage. His appointment has not yet been officially confirmed, however.

At first glance, the separation from Garcia comes as a surprise, because Belgium was sportingly among the eight best teams in the tournament and acquitted itself creditably with the round-of-16 victory against the USA and the quarterfinal appearance against the eventual world champions. Garcia himself pointed to the difficult starting situation after taking over in early 2025 in his statement.

Belgium belongs to League A of the UEFA Nations League, in which only the strongest European national teams play. This status, as well as the World Cup placing among the top eight, illustrate the sporting level that Belgium maintained under Garcia. For the association, however, this was evidently not enough to extend the contract expiring at the end of July.

Record Under Garcia: Top Eight in the World

With the decision, the tenure of a coach ends who was known for an attacking style of play and the integration of experienced leading players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku. Both players were part of the regular lineup and shaped the team significantly during the tournament. Their continued involvement in the national team is planned independently of the question of the coach.

The van Bommel candidacy is also interesting because of his dual qualification: As a Dutch coach with Bundesliga experience, he would help the Belgian association reshape the team while at the same time strengthening ties to the German and Dutch football markets. Nothing is yet known about the exact terms of a possible appointment.

Garcia's previous coaching stations read like an international list: The Frenchman coached Olympique Lyon, AS Roma, Olympique Marseille and, since 2025, the Belgian national team, among others. His departure from Brussels is part of a series of coaching changes that European associations frequently make after major tournaments in order to create altered sporting framework conditions.

The timing of the announcement is telling: Just one day after the World Cup final, the Belgian association chose the moment to make the separation public. In doing so, the association is responding to the tight sporting cycle that already continues in the autumn with the UEFA Nations League matches. A swift successor solution is therefore urgently needed from a sporting perspective.

Outlook: Nations League and Euro Qualifying

On the question of the reasons for Garcia's premature departure, the official statements remain vague. Garcia himself spoke only of "Diskussionen" with the association, without elaborating on them in substance. The association, in turn, referred to a "new cycle" that it is preparing together with the sporting director.

The personnel decision is also likely to have been noted attentively on the part of the players. Stars such as Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku had played a key role under Garcia. Whether the successor will build on their experience or deliberately initiate a reset is one of the central sporting-political questions of the coming weeks.

With a view to the upcoming tasks in the Nations League as well as the qualifying for Euro 2028 in Great Britain, Belgium has around one and a half years to shape the transition. The choice of the new coach will be seen as a signal for the future direction of the team – whether continuity or a fresh start.

Until the official appointment of a successor, the Belgian association is expected to present an interim solution or commission the existing coaching staff to prepare the upcoming international matches.
