Following the USA's 1:4 loss to Belgium in the World Cup Round of 16, it is above all the FIFA Disciplinary Committee that faces criticism: it had suspended the red card against Folarin Balogun and allowed him to play against Belgium. US President Donald Trump confirmed meanwhile that he had called FIFA chief Gianni Infantino, and UEFA, the DFB and several European associations are speaking of a red line crossed.

Following the USA's 1:4 (0:3) defeat to Belgium in the World Cup Round of 16, the controversial lifting of Folarin Balogun's red card continues to draw sharp criticism of FIFA, after US President Donald Trump confirmed a phone call with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Background: A Red Card and Its Consequences

FIFA defended its decision in a statement spanning 13 paragraphs: „Die Aussetzung der Vollstreckung der genannten Sperre wurde unter Berücksichtigung aller besonderen Umstände des Vorfalls sowie der verfügbaren Beweismittel beschlossen." The world body did not specify which circumstances were meant or which evidence was reviewed. The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee also stated that the red card as such had been upheld in principle.

The Belgian Football Association RBFA's request to challenge Balogun's eligibility to play even before kickoff was rejected by FIFA on the grounds that the association was „nicht Verfahrenspartei und besitze somit keine Beschwerdebefugnis gegen die Entscheidung". Belgium announced it would „auch in den kommenden Stunden, Tagen und Monaten weiterhin für die grundlegenden Prinzipien von Ethik, fairem Wettbewerb und die Interessen des Fußballs insgesamt einzusetzen".
