Jude Bellingham has fired England into the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup with a brace in the quarterfinal, scoring his sixth goal of the tournament.

Bellingham scored twice in the round of 16 against Mexico and added two more in the quarterfinal. With that, the Real Madrid midfielder has netted two goals in two consecutive knockout matches — a feat achieved by only one other player in World Cup history.

Historic Feat at 23

At 23 years and 12 days, Bellingham is the second-youngest player to accomplish this. Only Brazilian football legend Pelé was younger during a comparable run. Bellingham has thus placed himself in the company of one of the greatest figures in world football.

Reaching the penultimate round was also a personal turning point for the Englishman. After the European Championship two years ago, Bellingham had been heavily criticized back home in England. Reports suggested he was a contentious figure in the squad and served as a scapegoat.

From Scapegoat to Hopeful

An Adidas commercial set to the Beatles' "Hey, Jude" had at the time cast the then-23-year-old as the "savior of England." The reality within the English team back then looked far less heroic. The criticism of him as a person and as a player weighed heavily.
