Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates testified on Wednesday in Washington before a U.S. House of Representatives investigative committee and said that the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein had blackmailed him with information about extramarital affairs.
Gates appeared pursuant to a subpoena before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is investigating possible failures of the U.S. Department of Justice in handling the cases against Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. The session was held behind closed doors, with the public excluded. The transcript of the Gates hearing is to be released in a few days.
In a statement to the committee, Gates said Epstein had tried to pressure him to force renewed cooperation. "Epstein tried to use information about my infidelity – in addition to the many lies he told about it – to pressure me into working with him again," according to a statement submitted to the committee. Gates also stated: "I hope my testimony helps the committee's important work of finding justice for the victims."
