Mainz, 03 August 2026

The Mainz-based pharmaceutical company BioNTech has appointed Guido Oelkers as its new CEO; he succeeds Ugur Sahin, the co-founder and long-time head of the company.

BioNTech is thus placing an experienced leader from the European pharmaceutical industry at its helm. Oelkers previously worked at the Swedish biopharmaceutical company Swedish Orphan Biovitrum (Sobi), at whose head he had stood since 2017. This position is explicitly mentioned in the company's announcement and forms the most important professional reference for his new role in Mainz.

The personnel decision marks one of the most significant changes in BioNTech's corporate history. The company became internationally known during the coronavirus pandemic, not least through the development of an mRNA-based vaccine against the coronavirus together with the US pharmaceutical group Pfizer. BioNTech is headquartered in Mainz in Rhineland-Palatinate and employs numerous staff there and at other locations, including Idar-Oberstein.
