Mainz, 04 August 2026

The Mainz-based pharmaceutical company BioNTech published its results for the second quarter of 2026 on Monday, pointing to increased research and development costs.

Background: CureVac Integration and ADC Pipeline

BioNTech attributed the rise in R&D expenses to higher spending on programs in the areas of immuno-oncology ('IO') and antibody-drug conjugates ('ADC'), in particular for the drug candidates Pumitamig and Gotistobart. The company also stated that impairments of intangible assets, as well as the CureVac business activities consolidated since the end of 2025, had additionally increased costs. The company stated the following verbatim: "höhere Kosten für die Entwicklung von Immunonkologie- ('IO') und Antikörper-Wirkstoff-Konjugat (antibody drug conjugate,'ADC')-Programmen, insbesondere Pumitamig und Gotistobart, sowie durch Wertminderungen von immateriellen Vermögenswerten und durch die Einbeziehung der Geschäftstätigkeit von CureVac, das Ende 2025 erworben wurde".
