Ahead of Brazil’s election, the public has been focused on the banking scandal involving the presidential office, the Bolsonaro family’s political ties to militias and a Federal Police investigation.

At the center of the campaign are allegations concerning the presidential office under Jair Bolsonaro and the family’s links to armed militias. The documented claims include honors that Flávio Bolsonaro is alleged to have presented to known militia members while serving as a state lawmaker.

Robert Muggah, co-founder of the Igarapé Institute, said: “It even went so far as Flávio presenting some known militia members with honors through the state legislature,” said Robert Muggah, who co-founded the Igarapé Institute, one of Brazil’s leading public safety think tanks: “They were honored for their supposed achievements as ‘outstanding citizens.’” The Igarapé Institute is among Brazil’s leading public safety think tanks.
