Mainz, 30 August 2026
SC Paderborn picked up a 0-0 draw at FSV Mainz 05 on the second matchday of the Bundesliga, taking a point from its return to the top flight of German football.
Match flow and key moments
Mainz dominated in particular the opening 45 minutes and worked several promising opportunities, but came away with nothing in front of the SC Paderborn goal. The hosts' best chance fell to Nadiem Amiri, who in the 35th minute dragged a direct shot from around 20 metres just wide of the left post after a lay-off from Lee. Shortly after the restart, Amiri was held in the box by Jarno ter Horst, but managed to lay the ball off to Phillipp Mwene, whose effort from about 15 metres was parried by Paderborn keeper Nahuel Noll.
In the second half, the game became increasingly flat, as both sides visibly lacked precision in their build-up play. Paderborn, who had kicked off the season in midweek as a Bundesliga returnee from East Westphalia, tried to create danger through counters and set pieces, but found almost no ways through Mainz's tightly packed defence.
