Paderborn, 25 May 2026

SC Paderborn defeated VfL Wolfsburg 2-1 after extra time in the relegation playoff second leg on Monday evening to secure promotion to the Bundesliga for the third time in club history.

The tension-filled match at the sold-out Home Deluxe Arena began with an early setback for the hosts when Wolfsburg's Dzenan Pejcinovic scored after just three minutes, giving the Bundesliga side a precious away goal.

However, the tide turned dramatically in the 14th minute when Wolfsburg's Joakim Maehle received a second yellow card, leaving his team with ten men and Paderborn with a sustained territorial advantage.

Pressure and Persistence

Despite dominating possession, Paderborn struggled to break down the defensive wall until Filip Bilbija equalised in the 38th minute, heading in from close range to send the home crowd into raptures.
