The President of the Berlin House of Representatives, Cornelia Seibeld (CDU), also delivered a speech. She reminded attendees that freedom is not a given and requires active defense.

"Menschenwürde, Freiheit und Demokratie bleiben ohne persönlichen Einsatz nicht dauerhaft bestehen. Diese Werte lassen sich nicht vom Sofa aus verteidigen," Seibeld said. She noted that this is why a discussion about reinstating compulsory military service is rightly being held again.

Seibeld further argued that the current security challenges make relying solely on volunteers potentially insufficient in the long term. "Die sicherheitspolitischen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit machen deutlich: Auf Dauer wird es vermutlich nicht ausreichen, allein auf Freiwilligkeit zu setzen," she added.

Counter-Protest Nearby

The ceremony took place in a cordoned-off area. Not far from the event, a small group of people demonstrated against military service, according to police.

In a call for the protest, left-wing groups criticized what they described as a growing "Militarisierung des öffentlichen Raums," or militarization of public space. Their rallying cry was: "Wir geloben der Kriegsdienstverweigerung," meaning "We pledge conscientious objection."
