The former Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, is to be asked by King Charles III on Monday to form a government, after 349 Labour MPs declared their support for his candidacy for the party leadership.
Mathematical Majority for Burnham
After months of crisis in the British Labour Party, the succession of the resigned Prime Minister Keir Starmer is taking shape. The PA news agency reported that Andy Burnham will be the next Prime Minister. Sky News wrote that his election as party leader is mathematically guaranteed.
A candidacy for Labour Party leader requires the support of 20 percent of Labour MPs, which currently corresponds to 81 office-holders. According to PA news agency, Burnham now has 349 MPs behind him. Since the Labour caucus has a total of 403 members, it is arithmetically impossible for a rival candidate to reach the required number of nominations.
As early as the previous week, 322 of the 403 Labour MPs had signalled their support. A further 27 backers have since been added. The path for an internal party confirmation is thus effectively clear. British media are speaking of a "coronation," invoking monarchical ritual.
Party Leadership on Friday
Burnham had previously still lacked the formal backing of three party-affiliated organisations and trade unions, which is however regarded as a formality. Should this approval come as expected, he intends to take over the party leadership on Friday of next week.
