BVB and FC Barcelona agree on Adeyemi transfer: 22 million euros plus bonuses

Adeyemi had come to Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg four years ago for a good 30 million euros. In his four years at the Ruhr club, he made 146 competitive appearances and scored 36 goals, seven of which came in the past season. His contract with BVB still runs until summer 2027.

The 24-year-old had previously informed the club of his desire to move. Dortmund did not stand in his way given his expiring contract. Measured against his modest playing time of 1,836 minutes across 39 matches, the left-footer put up a respectable haul of 16 goal involvements.

In Spain, however, Adeyemi faces tough competition. The wing positions are strongly occupied by 18-year-old exceptional talent Lamine Yamal and the newly signed Englishman Anthony Gordon. Barça had previously signed Gordon for 80 million euros to strengthen the attack.

Competition for places in Barcelona

Hansi Flick first called Adeyemi up to the German national team in September 2021 and nominated him for the World Cup in Qatar. The fact that he did not make the cut for the 2026 World Cup was also due to BVB coach Niko Kovac using him largely as a substitute, particularly in the second half of the past season.

The new substitute role had an impact on Adeyemi's market value, which fell from 60 million euros in December 2025 to a recent 40 million euros. That made him, after Bayern Munich's Harry Kane, the most valuable Bundesliga professional with a contract expiring in 2027.

For BVB, the transfer is turning out to be lucrative. With the fixed fee of 22 million euros and the possible bonus payments, Dortmund could finance a transfer in the order of El Mala. The BVB share price remained unfazed in after-hours Tradegate trading, holding steady at 3.04 euros.

Financial implications for BVB

The transfer is reminiscent of earlier moves between the two clubs. Ousmane Dembélé went on strike to join Barcelona in 2017 and brought Borussia a total of 148 million euros. The other direction was taken by Marc Bartra in 2016 for 8 million euros and Paco Alcácer in 2018 for 23 million euros.

Four Germans wore the Catalans' shirt in the first half of the 20th century – they were followed by Bernd Schuster (1980–1988) and, after the turn of the millennium, Robert Enke (2002/03), İlkay Gündoğan (2023/24), and Marc-André ter Stegen, who has been under contract since 2014.

Shortly before the agreement, pay-TV broadcaster Sky had reported that the Spanish top club, given the short remaining contract length of Adeyemi, did not want to pay more than 30 million euros. In the end, both sides agreed on a lower fixed sum with performance-related bonuses.

And the last remaining center forward in Flick's squad, Ferran Torres, is also said to be flirting with a departure if no agreement is reached on his contract, which expires in 2027. The Catalans' squad planning therefore remains in motion.

With the move, BVB loses one of its most dynamic wingers. Coach Niko Kovac must reshuffle the attack, while Barcelona gains another speed player for the wings. The BVB "springboard" no longer appears to be needed for Adeyemi.

Outlook on squad planning and the stock market

Berenberg Bank continues to rate the BVB share as a "Buy." Even after the transfer became known, the analysts see the club well positioned in the long term. The club has a squad of 29 players and recently signed Mathis Albert.
