Vienna, 10 August 2026
An international conference in Vienna is addressing the legacy of the Byzantine Empire and its relevance to contemporary questions such as the climate crisis and artificial intelligence.
Bridge Between Antiquity and Modernity
Under a title that establishes a connection to the present, researchers and students are meeting in Vienna to examine the Eastern Roman Empire not merely as a historical epoch but as a space for thinking about today's problems. The organizer is the International Committee for Byzantine Studies (ICBS).
Claudia Rapp, a Byzantinist and contributor to the conference, emphasizes the empire's transhistorical significance in a contribution for APA. She states that the Byzantine Empire "wirkte geografisch wie auch zeitlich weit über seine Grenzen" – and thus exerted influence beyond the medieval period.
