The German cabinet on Wednesday advanced the draft of a Reserve Strengthening Act aimed at increasing the number of Bundeswehr reservists from roughly 60,000 to 200,000 by 2035. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is relying on mandatory service instead of the previous principle of dual voluntariness, and is thereby drawing criticism from the business community.

The German cabinet convened on Wednesday at the Defense Ministry to deliberate on the draft of a Reserve Strengthening Act, with which Defense Minister Boris Pistorius intends to expand the Bundeswehr reserve to 200,000 reservists by 2035.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) wants to significantly expand the Bundeswehr reserve. The draft provides for the number of reservists to rise from the current figure of around 60,000 to 200,000 by the year 2035. This would more than triple the personnel strength of the reserve. By 2035, the Bundeswehr as a whole is to grow to 460,000 personnel.
