Café Engländer files for restructuring proceedings – Managing director has passed away

Café Engländer was for many years one of the well-known restaurants in the Styrian capital. With the sudden death of the person in charge, there was apparently no longer a functioning leadership capable of running the business through an already strained economic phase. The result is the now-initiated restructuring attempt, in which insolvency proceedings are being opened with the aim of a possible restructuring.

Outstanding salaries since June

Employees are now worried about their outstanding pay. Since wages have partially not been paid since June 2026, many workers are facing significant financial difficulties. They can register their claims as insolvency claims within the framework of the restructuring proceedings, which is the usual course of action in such proceedings.

For the creditors – including suppliers, landlords and possibly also tax authorities – the restructuring proceedings mean a period of uncertainty. In the best case, a restructuring is achieved with a restructuring plan that secures part of the claims. Otherwise, the break-up of the company looms.

What happens next

The further proceedings will be handled by the competent court in Graz. The AKV, which acts as the creditors' representative, is accompanying the process. A court-appointed restructuring administrator is likely to be appointed in the coming days to review the business operations and develop a possible course for continuation.

What will happen to the location and the remaining jobs is currently open. The AKV emphasized that the primary goal of the proceedings is the continuation of the business, provided a viable restructuring concept can be presented. Without such a concept, the closure of Café Engländer is a real possibility.

The industry is under pressure: in Styrian gastronomy as well, rising costs for energy, food and personnel in recent years have pushed many businesses to the limits of economic viability. The case of Café Engländer illustrates how quickly a company – even after many years in the market – can run into difficulties when key personnel and financial prerequisites collapse.
