Vienna, July 7, 2026

Christian Wukonigg, operator of the well-known Café Engländer in Vienna's inner city, passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at the age of 67.

The final hours

As several media outlets report in agreement, the well-known gastronomer took his own life on Tuesday morning. A police spokesperson confirmed the incident; no further details about the person were released. Around midday, a police and rescue operation was underway in Postgasse in Vienna, as local residents and passers-by told oe24.

The Prague native ran the establishment for decades. In 1990, Wukonigg took over the venue – then still called Windhag – together with Attila Corbaci. Shortly afterwards, they had to file for insolvency. In the early 2000s, Wukonigg dared another attempt together with Wolfgang Jelinek and reopened the establishment. Das hat er getan mit dem Wolfi Jelinek zusammen, der noch weit vor ihm gestorben ist.
