Houston, July 5, 2026

The Canadian men's national team was eliminated in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup in Houston with a 0:3 defeat to Morocco, but is framing the tournament as a historic success and a new benchmark for the coming years.

The exit came with a clear 0:3 loss to Morocco. Even the first half, according to coach Jesse Marsch's assessment, was the best he had ever experienced with the team, midfielder Stephen Eustáquio reported. "Jesse told us that it was probably the best first half he has ever experienced with us," said Eustáquio.

Despite the defeat, Canada looks back on an unusually successful tournament. After its two previous World Cup appearances in 1986 and 2022, when it was eliminated in the group stage without earning a point, the co-host country at least reached the round of 16 this time. "Reaching the top 16 teams at this World Cup is fantastic – for the country and for this team. But that's exactly where we have to pick up from now. That has to be our new benchmark," Eustáquio said.
