Canada's Culture Minister Marc Miller on Wednesday introduced a bill in Montreal that is intended to ban under-16s from using social media accounts and at the same time impose stricter rules on the handling of AI-generated content.

The draft, called the Digital Safety Act, provides that social media accounts may in future only be opened from the age of 16. The regulation is aimed at providers in Canada, who are to be held responsible for compliance with the age limit. At the presentation, Miller pointed to the harms children and young people can suffer online: „We have seen the very serious consequences that online harms can have … The safety of children cannot be an afterthought.
