Canada will take part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 2027 in Bulgaria, as the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and CBC/Radio Canada announced on Wednesday in Geneva.
A Historic Step
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and its newest member, the Canadian public broadcaster CBC/Radio Canada, jointly announced on Wednesday that Canada will participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest in Bulgaria. This makes the world's second-largest country the first entirely new participant since Australia in 2015. The announcement falls on Canada Day, the country's national holiday.
The move was made possible by CBC/Radio Canada's recent full membership in the EBU. Until now, the broadcaster had been only an associate member of the broadcasting union since 1950, which excluded it from participating in the song contest. EBU membership is a prerequisite for taking part in the ESC.
