A surprising 0-0 between Spain and World Cup newcomers Cape Verde has led to a payout of around four million euros on the betting platform Polymarket to a user who had bet on the Spanish victory.
The match, which had been considered an almost certain affair for the reigning European champions, ended goalless. Spain managed 27 shots on goal and dominated possession, but repeatedly failed to get past the Cape Verdean goalkeeper Vozinha. The 40-year-old keeper was celebrated as a hero after the final whistle.
How the Betting Win Came About
On the prediction platform Polymarket, a player using the pseudonym "fishalive" had bet around 428,000 US dollars on the fact that Spain would not win the game. According to the reports, another bet by the same user amounted to one million US dollars on a Spanish victory. After the final whistle, the tip triggered a payout of more than 4.7 million US dollars, which converts to around four million euros.
